|Phoenix, Ariz. - Immediate Release - The giant purple carpet covering the grounds at Children First
Academy of Tempe on April 29 wasn't your average Berber. This carpet was made from 200 purple t-shirt-clad volunteers who spent the day
building a playground for the homeless and transitional students who attend the Tempe charter school.
"In order to build this playground, we have been reaching out and collaborating with our community, vendors, friends, neighbors and strangers,"
Co-founder Eileen Spitalny said. "It takes a village to raise the $73,000 needed. With the help of many, we made it happen for these kids."
The volunteers began building around 8:30 a.m. Together, they moved 175 cubic yards of mulch; mixed and poured 9.5tons of concrete;
built seven picnic tables, six benches and two shade structures; built and painted cubbies and a white board for an outdoor classroom; painted
the school logo and new basketball court lines, hopscotch, four square, wall ball targets and racing track lines; and built a 3,100-square-foot playground
designed by the 200 children who attend Children First Academy of Tempe. By 2:30 p.m., the playground was complete!
"I have to say that this experience did something for all of us who helped build that day and all of the planning that came before
build day," Spitalny said, "Relationships were built, and life-changing moments were experienced."
Although the students were not able to play on their new playground that Friday afternoon, the smiles and hoots of laughter that were seen and heard
when they returned to school the following Monday morning seemed to be well worth the wait.
Fairytale Brownies has been a partner with the national nonprofit KaBOOM! since 2001, donating brownies and funds to help build playgrounds across
the country. The build at CFA is the first one that Fairytale has completely planned and funded from start to finish. Fairytale closed its bakery for the
day so that all team members could participate.
